LAWRANCE Francis C. Lawrance, age 87, of Southport, died at home on Thursday, June 3, 2004, following a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Anne Dunn Lawrance; his daughter, Sandra Webel of Locust Valley, N.Y.; his son, Francis C. Lawrance Jr. of Redding; his stepchildren, Cynthia Michalis, Debra Murray, Peter M. Dunn, Elizabeth Ruffa, Alison Witherbee; five grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren. Mr. Lawrance was born in 1916 in Bay Shore, N.Y. He attended the Buckley School in Manhattan and was a graduate of Groton School and Harvard University, class of 1939. He followed his father, the designer of the Wright Whirlwind air cooled engine that powered Charles Lindbergh's plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, on historic Atlantic crossing, into the family business, Lawrance Egineering and Research Corp of Linden, N.J., which was responsible for creating auxiliary power plants for B-17's and B-24 bombers. In 1943 he joined the U.S. Navy where he served with the Pacific fleet until 1946 as navigator of a summer class destroyer, the Mannert L. Abele. He returned to his family business until 1949 when he joined the insurance brokerage firm, J.S. Frelinghuysen of New York, N.Y. where he became president in 1964 and served until his retirement and the aquisition of the company by Emmet & Chandler of California. During his lifetime, he was Chairman of the Board of the Emergency Shelter in New York City, the Fairfield Orchestra, and was actively involved in support of Trinity Church of Southport. Burial services will be private. A memorial service will be held on June 29, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Southport.
