Florence G. Kiernan died peacefully on Thursday night on March 22, 2001 at Nyack Hospital at the age of 100. Florence was born at 210 E. 57th Street, NYC, on February 5, 1901 to Emily Katene and Sylvester Petrie. She married John J. Kiernan on September 17, 1924 and they lived at 196th Street, off the Grand Concourse, Bronx, for 40 years until her husband John, died in 1968. She moved to Monterey Garden, Route 304, Bardonia in September 1980 and on February 1, 1999 she became a permanent resident at Northern Manor Geriatric Nursing Home, Nanuet, until March 3, 2001 when she was admitted to Nyack Hospital. Florence is survived by her only daughter Grace Gowrie and son-in-law John J. Gowrie of Bardonia and now Stony Point. In addition to her daughter Grace and husband John, she is survived by four granddaughters, Mrs. Maryellen and her husband Steven Faecher of Flanders, NJ, Mrs. Jeanne Guarino and her husband Alex of Garnerville, Mrs. Patricia Guido and husband Tony of Pinebush, NY, and Mrs. Elizabeth Schmitte and her husband Richard of Lake Mohawk, NJ and eight great grandchildren: Christina, Alex Jr., Matthew, Daniel, Victoria, Andrew, Alyssia, and Kyle. Florence celebrated her 100th Birthday at Northern Manor on February 11, 2001 surrounded by family and many friends and (with her very alert mind) had a happy and wonderful day. Congressman Ben Gilman informed her that she would be receiving Greetings from President George Bush in the near future and it will be forwarded to her in Heaven. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 26 at 10:15 am at St. Francis of Assisi Church, West Nyack, NY. Interment will follow in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
