->Edward A. KnappPOUGHKEEPSIE - Edward A. Knapp, 97, of Poughkeepsie, NY , passed away peacefully at River Valley Care Center where he was in rehab following a hospital stay. He previously resided at Pine Ridge Adult Care. He was born on December 25, 1915, in New York City, one of eleven children. At the age of 18 he joined the Federal CCC program of the New Deal where he was stationed at Norrie State Park in Staatsburg, NY. He gained skills there that he used throughout his life.He met his wife, Grace Evelyn Henion, who lived near the Park and they married and lived in the City of Poughkeepsie, NY, first renting an apartment on Washington Street, then buying a home in the Fairview-T/Poughkeepsie area from Grace Evelyn's sister Mildred Henion in 1975.Edward served in World War II, from July 18, 1942 to November 1945. He was a radar technician in the US Army, serving in Northern Africa and Europe/France and earning a good conduct medal.Upon returning to civilian life he worked for Roe Movers and was a long time Employee of the US Postal Service. At the Post Office, Mansion St., Poughkeepsie, he was known as the "Dapper Snapper" for his snazzy looks and fast mail sorting abilities. He enjoyed gardening and working in his basement workshop. He also assisted his brother-in-law in the building of local houses in Dutchess County.Ed is pre deceased by his late wife Grace Evelyn Henion Knapp and survived by nieces and nephews including Dessie, Robert III and Jennifer Henion of Dutchess County, Robert S. Henion of Florida, Mary, Conrad and Chadwick Schatte of Florida as well as his brother in law , Edwin Henion and his family of Colorado.His family wishes to thank Carmen Metesan and Pine Ridge Adult Care in Wappingers Falls for Uncle Ed's last several months in a loving environment.Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 14 at 11 am in Rhinebeck Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dutchess Outreach (29 North Hamilton Street Suite 222 Poughkeepsie NY) in Edward's honorArrangements have been entrusted to Parmele, Auchmoody & Schoonmaker Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie.
