JOHNSTON, Edith Rushton, alifetime resident of Montgomíery, died on February 28,2009. She was born on Auígust 22, 1920 in Gloucester,Massachusetts to Coloneland Mrs. Marion Rushton andwas married to the late Watíkins Cook Johnston. Edithexemplified her love for thiscity through her generouscontributions of time and talíent to a wide variety of civicand cultural organizations.Her interest in history, anítiques and preservationcame together when sheserved as a member of thefounding Board of Directorsof Landmarks Foundation ofMontgomery in the late 1960'sand early 1970's. She wasalso very involved with theMontgomery Museum, theShakespeare Theatre andmany other community orgaínizations. As a devotedmember of the Church of theAscension, Edith spearheadíed the needlepoint commitítee which designed the kneeílers in the church. She wasalso a member of the AltarGuild and taught SundaySchool for many years. Edithdelighted in all the pleasuresof her garden, especially insharing its bounty and hervast botanical knowledgewith family and friends. Anardent bridge player, Edithtempered many a game withher subtle, clever wit that keptboth partners and opponentsentertained, no matter thescore. She personified thegenteel Southern culture andstrength of her time. Hergreatest pleasure was herchildren and grandchildrenwho include: Wat and CarolJohnston, Frank and HattieBoo Johnston, Ray and HelenJohnston, Edith JohnstonCrook, Watkins and JamieJohnston, Myra and JasonDorey, Mason and GinnyJohnston, Frank and DaphneJohnston, Brice and SusanJohnston, Ray Johnston,Theresa Johnston, McDowelland Mary Pat Crook, Caroíline Crook, Jim Crook andeleven great-grandchildren.Her devoted caregivers wereLillie Patton, Dollie Robinson,Shirley Purdue and MillieCroskey. Pallbearers will be:Watkins Johnston, MasonJohnston, Frank Johnston,Brice Johnston, McDowellCrook, Jason Dorey, BenStakely and Harry Stakely.Visitation will be Wednesday,March 4 at 1:00 p.m. in Asícension Hall at the Church ofthe Ascension followed by fuíneral services at 2:00 p.m. Aprivate graveside service willbe held at GreenwoodCemetery.
