GORHAM - Dorothy Leavitt Davis, 91, formerly of Kezar Falls, died suddenly at Maine Medical Center on June 24, 2008. She was born in 1917 in Perham, the daughter of Llewellyn Carleton and Eda Grant Leavitt. Dot grew up on Stevens Avenue in Portland and attended schools there. She graduated from Deering High School 1935. In 1938 Mrs. Davis graduated from Gorham Normal School, where she was active in the drama club and served as editor of the school paper "The Oracle." Later she received her bachelor of Science degree from Gorham State College in 1966, now called the University of Southern Maine. In 1941 Dorothy married Gordon K. Davis in Kezar Falls. Mrs. Davis taught school in Porter, from 1938 to 1941 resigning after her marriage and returning to teaching after her children were in school. Her first position upon returning was teaching five grades at South Hiram Elementary School known as the "Little Red School House." Dottie continued teaching at George E. Jack School in Standish and the Milliken School in Parsonsfield before retiring in 1979. Mrs. Davis was a member of the National and Maine Education Association and the Maine Federated Women's Club, known as the "21 Club" where she was a 50 year member. Dot was also a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church of Kezar Falls and a charter member of the Keswick Club that she helped form in 1939. In June 2004 she and her husband moved into the Gorham House, where she quickly became involved in many activities like Bingo, basket making and a Red Hat Member. At this time the family would like to thank all the Gorham House staff for the excellent care she received. Her hobbies included knitting, rug hooking, cross stitch and most of all her grandchildren. She also enjoyed watching the Red Sox and Tiger Woods. Dottie was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 2004; a sister, Gertrude Klager and two brothers, Clovis and Meridith. She is survived by her daughter Carol Ann Stone and husband Walter of Porter, three sons, Gary of Gorham, Peter and his wife Rhonda of Keizer, Ore., and Scott and his wife Randi of Arizona; eight grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. A visiting hour will be held from 1 to 1:59 p.m. June 28, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., at Neal & York Funeral Home, 12 High St., Porter. Pastor Alan Cogswell will officiate. Burial will follow in Kezar Falls Burial Grounds. Online condolences may be sent at www.nealyork.com. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: The Gorham House Activities Fund 50 New Portland Rd.
