Doris Marie Poulin, 82, of Waterville, Maine, and Lecanto, Fla., passed away Friday morning, Dec. 24, 2010, at Nature Coast Assisted living in Lecanto.Doris was born in St. Petersburg, Fla., on Aug. 21, 1928, the daughter of Leon and Marie (Lauer) Goodwin. She attended the Waterville school system and graduated from Waterville High School in June of 1946. Doris married Bernard Poulin also of Waterville. Doris met Bernard, her husband of 64 years, at a Waterville High School football game and became engaged during her senior year. When Bernard returned from his Naval Service in the Pacific, after World War II, they married on Sept. 6, 1946. Doris worked for a number of years at the Thayer Hospital in Waterville and eventually left her position to help her husband start his optical business, Bernard R. Poulin Opticians, which is located in downtown Waterville. Doris dedicated her life to raising a family of five children and managing the bookkeeping side of the optical business. She spent many evenings at the optical shop decorating the interior and the store windows with seasonal trimmings. Her window dressings were known on Main Street in Waterville as some of the best during those years. Doris also received a certificate in Interior Design from LaSalle University during the 1960's. She decorated her home and consulted with other homeowners in the Waterville area on color and fabric choices, well ahead of the Home DŽcor popularity that is now so popular in today's market. She also spent her free time golfing, painting, and taking art classes. Doris developed as an accomplished oil painter and even during her last year of life continued to work on her paintings. Her creative side was not limited to painting. She was also a superb seamstress and knitter, giving handmade gifts to her family and hundreds of hats, mittens and slippers to children in need in the Waterville area.
