Groton - Donald Matthew Steel, 94, of Noank, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at The Groton Regency in Groton.Born Oct. 5, 1919, in Providence, R.I., he was the son of the late Matthew Steel and Evelyn (Ferguson) Steel. Don met and married Dorothy (Allen) Steel while stationed in England. Dorothy passed away in June 1987.He was a World War II veteran who served his country honorably in the U.S. Army/Air Corps. Don went on to receive a drafting degree from URI and spent his career working for Electric Boat designing ventilation systems for submarines. He enjoyed a full life devoted to family and friends. He also loved working with stained glass and traveling. He was a member of the Noank Fire Police and the Masonic Lodge.He is survived by his son, David Steel and his wife, Cindy, of Noank; and his daughter, Heather (Steel) St. Louis of Noank; his grandchildren, Jeremy and Liz St. Louis, Christopher St. Louis, Marissa Steel; and four great-grandchildren, Alex, Jayden, Elia and Miles St. Louis.We wish to express a special thanks to the staffs at the Groton Regency and Beacon Hospice who have taken such good care of Don. You have been a great support to his family as well.Don and Dorothy enjoyed the fellowship of the Noank Baptist Church throughout their life. We thank them for their continued support in our celebration of Don's life.A memorial service celebrating Don's life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights in Noank. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at the Noank Valley Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Noank Fire Company, P.O.
