Donald Bruce HandDonald Bruce Hand, 73, died at the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Residence, on Monday, May 24, 2011.Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janis, his daughter, Leisa, his brother, Robert E. Hand (Carol) of Lawrenceville, Ga., his sister-in-law, Juvene Hand, of Panama City, Fl. and a number of nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas Bernard Hand and Claudine Hand, his son, Bruce Hand, and his brothers Thomas B. Hand, Jr. and Walter Albert Hand.Don was born in Columbia, Al. and spent his childhood in Headland, Al. He graduated with a BS from Troy State College. Don's first job was teaching at Goodwyn Junior High, in Montgomery, Al. In Florida, he taught at Century, Escambia High, Washington High, and Pine Forest High. During his time of teaching he obtained a MA from FSU. One of his greatest joys as a teacher was working with his students on science projects.He was a member of First United Methodist Church for 47 years and a member of the Tifounden Sunday School Class for many years. He enjoyed reading, playing golf, and metal detecting. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Ross and Rev. Larry Mosley will officiate.The family will receive friends at a visitation and reception following the service at the Perry Home, which is next to the church.In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Bruce Hand Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church or to Alzheimers Family Services, 1901 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501. Our family extends our gratitude to Courtney Cook and Anne Williams for their commitment and dedication to Alzheimers Family Services. We are also most grateful to Covenant Hospice, especially Don's nurse, Stacey, and aide, Tina, for their daily love, concern and support.
