WOODSTOCK - Dennis King Palmer, 77, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, at his home in Woodstock.He was born in Lynn, Mass., on Oct. 3, 1932, the son of Jere and Eva Leone (King) Palmer. He attended Salem State College. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He then went on to receive a masters in education from Tufts University, and continued with his graduate work Boston University and through various fellowship programs at Syracuse University, Rochester University, and the University of Minnesota.He began work as a guidance counselor in the Massachusetts public schools system where he met his wife, Virginia Susan Toth. After becoming director of guidance in Stoneham, he joined Houghton Mifflin Company in Boston as senior editor, and worked in the educational testing area until he became editor-in-chief of Career Education and Guidance at Houghton. He moved his family to Vermont by transferring to Time Share Corporation, a subsidiary of Houghton Mifflin. He was principal of Woodstock Union Middle School.He enjoyed golf and was an avid Celtics and Red Sox fan.He is survived by his wife Virginia Toth Palmer of Woodstock, his daughter Susan Wetherald of Arlington, Va., his son Stephen of Derry, N.H., his daughter Rebecca Lewandoski of S. Strafford, and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Erle of Haverhill, Mass., two nieces and three nephews.A memorial visitation will take place at Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock on Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hanover, N.H., followed by a reception at the church.
