Avis de décès de Deborah-Hoffman Reid


Deborah Sprague Hoffman Reid, 93, died on August 6, 2012 in Naples, Florida. She was born in Boston on February 16, 1919, the second child of Charles Francis Sprague and Elizabeth Choate Kimball Sprague. She grew up in Swampscott, MA and graduated from The Winsor School in Boston and Sarah Lawrence College in 1942. She was a member of the Colonial Dames and a former member of the Vincent Club and the Junior League of Boston. At Sarah Lawrence she majored in child psychology and was the president of college government in her senior year. That year the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and when she was at home for Christmas vacation her older brother told her that a friend of his, Norman Cutten Hoffman, had been a turret officer on the battleship Oklahoma when as torpedoed in Pearl Harbor. For days no one knew what had happened to him. He survived and upon his return to the US, her brother suggested he look up Debbie. They were married in July 1942. Debbie and Norm settled in Wellesley, MA in 1951 and had four children. Debbie always enjoyed playing doubles tennis. She and her partners won many trophies for the Wellesley Tennis Association. As her children grew she parlayed her good tennis game, her patience and her child psychology studies into a tennis teaching business successfully balancing work her devotion to her family. She was hired by the Dana Hall School in Wellesley to teach tennis to their high school students and with her administrative and social skills she became the Athletic Director. She remained on the faculty at Dana Hall until she retired in 1981. After her retirement she and Norman moved to Naples, Florida, where she enjoyed the warmth and sunshine and more tennis. She took care of Norman through his many years of s uffering from Parkinsons disease. After he passed away, she met Roddey Reid, Jr. of Rock Hill, S.C. a retired Episcopal minister. They married in 1996 and enjoyed over 14 years together, most of it living at Moorings Park in Naples. She survived him by almost two years. In her final years while no longer able to play tennis she still relished the sun and warmth of Naples. She is survived by her four children: Deborah Hoffman Miller (James) of Belmont, MA, Harriet Hoffman Hinmon (John) of Edwards, CO, Roger Sprague Hoffman Nantucket, MA and Charles Norman Hoffman of Boulder, CO, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by Roddey Reids five children and four grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Trinity-by-the-Cove Episcopal Church, Naples, FL on August 25. Burial will be at noon on October 6, 2012 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brook Street, Wellesley, MA. Donations in her name may be made to the Moorings Park Foundation, 120 Moorings Park Drive, Naples, FL 34105
