HUTCHISON _ Deanna Jean (nee Labinsky) December 18, 1943 - January 13, 2005 Deanna died peacefully at home following a short, but courageous battle with lung cancer. Stubborn and spunky till the end, taking "one day at a time", she spent her last days visiting and reminiscing with sisters Shirley Diell and Jeanette Zachariuk, brother-in-law Jack Diell, daughter and son-in-law Carrie and Scott Ross, her three grandsons Liam, Jules and Angus, and niece and nephew Dawn and Jay Diell. Deanna was born in New Westminster at St. Mary's Hospital. She was the fifth of nine children born to John and Jean Labinsky (nee Gorovenko). Her life was difficult with many challenges, yet she strived to remain independent, maintaining a strong work ethic her entire life. She led a simple and mostly solitary life, asking little of anyone. As a single parent she struggled to raise her daughter, working as a waitress for 33 years, most notably at Forster's Mug & Musket in Surrey for 14 years. One year she tried her hand at running a second hand book store. Her last two years were spent making various crafts and selling them at craft fairs in the Lower Mainland. A lifelong animal lover, she knitted blankets for pets and distributed them to various S.P.C.A. shelters. Deanna came to gardening late in life, but found contentment there, managing a small plot at her townhouse that brought many compliments. She enjoyed Bingo and George Jones. As a teenager she sported an Elvis Presley do, and temporarily managed to overcome her fear of flying to visit Graceland in 1991 with her daughter and mother. A kind-hearted woman, Deanna will be sadly missed by her daughter Carrie and son-in-law Scott of Crescent Beach and their sons Liam, Jules and Angus; mother Jean Labinsky of Surrey, her sisters and brothers, and many nieces and nephews, brother and sister-in-laws and cousins. Carrie and Scott would like to thank Dr. Lee, oncologist at the Fraser Valley Cancer Clinic, Dr. Innes and Dr. King of the Crescent Beach Medical Arts Centre, the nurses, home support workers and occupational therapists of South Fraser Home Support for their kindness and wonderful care they gave Deanna during her final months. She wanted to die at home and they made it possible. Please join us for a celebration of Deanna's life. It will be held at the home of her family at 2997 McBride Avenue, Crescent Beach (Surrey), on Sunday, January 29th from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made at the S.P.C.A. shelter of your choice.
