JOHNSON, DWIGHT ALANDwight Alan Johnson, age 53 of Gainesville, Florida passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2011. He was born on June 17, 1957 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Walter and Sylvia Johnson. Dwight Johnson began his professional career working in the Sports Information Office at the University of Georgia. He was later the Assistant Sports Information Director at the University of Florida and the Associate Sports Information Director at Auburn University. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1979 where he worked in the WVU Athletic Department. In 2009, the University of Florida Alumni Association named him Honorary Alumnus in recognition of his outstanding service rendered to the University. In 1992, Dwight created the Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Award Program which honors athletes and coaches in all Florida high school sports. It is the only statewide awards program of its kind in the nation. Over 15 years ago, he co-founded the College Sports Publishers Association that coordinated national sales for 50 college publications dedicated exclusively to team specific content. He also founded the Danny Wuerffel Gators for Kids Golf Classic in Gainesville, FL and co-founded the University of Florida Fellowship of Christian Athletes "Dinner of Champions". The field of sports marketing allowed him to live out many of his childhood dreams. His job allowed him to attend the Super Bowl, US Open, World Series, Final Four, Stanley Cup, Kentucky Derby, Daytona 500, Indy 500, Masters, BCS National Championship and many more sporting events and venues. His job was his hobby. Dwight tried to honor God in all aspects of his life. After being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in early 2008, Dwight's life Bible verse became even more meaningful to him: Joshua 1:9 reads "Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." He enjoyed spending time with his wife and children and his many friends. His hobbies included playing golf, reading and history. He served as a Deacon at The Family Church in Gainesville, FL, was past Chairman of the Fundraising Committee-Golf/Young Life, Steering Committee/Oak Hall School Athletic Boosters, Cris Collingsworth Foundation/ Benefit Classic, Partnership for Strong Families foster parent/ adoptive parent and member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He is survived by his wife Debbie Johnson; children, Lindsey, Ryan, Corey and Tyler Johnson; brothers, Daniel Johnson of Ft. Wayne, IN, Richard Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA and Donald Johnson of Ohio. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 12:00pm at The Family Church, 2022 SW 122nd Street, Gainesville, with Pastor Max Wilkins officiating. Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd St. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Dwight's Fight Against ALS Fund @ The Gainesville Community Foundation, 5214 SW 91st Drive, Gainesville, FL 32608.
