Dorothy G. Sharpe-Hart passed away on March 26, 2009. Dorothy was born July 16,1916 to Francis and Margaret Goodman in Atlantic City, NJ where she graduated the Public Schools. Dorothy was awarded a full four-year scholarship to New York University as a result of winning a high school oratorical competition. Dorothy married her high school sweetheart, Howard D. Sharpe, while attending college. After graduating from college, Dorothy worked as an organizer at the Harlem YWCA, an administrator at the Patterson Community Center (Bronx,NY), and Director of the Edenwald Community Center (mid 1950's) also located in the Bronx. Dorothy entered the field of education in the 1960's - teaching at P.S. 112 and J.H.S. 142 in the Bronx. At the age of 55 (1973), she received a Master's Degree in Education from Pace University and graduated Phi Delta Kappa (number one in her class). After graduation, Dorothy began her career as a Guidance Counselor in District 9 (Bronx,NY) and eventually became the Assistant Principal at I.S. 166 - also located in the Bronx. she retired in 1981. Dorothy became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in 1976. She was elected Basileus in 1981 and served for two years. Dorothy's first husband, Howard D. Sharpe, passed away in 1974. She remarried William Joe Hart in 1985 and enjoyed this relationship, friendship until his passing in 1997. Joe was a District Governor of the Rotary International. As a result of her husband's association with the Rotary, Dorothy became a member of the Inner Wheel (the wives of the Rotarians). As a member of the Inner Wheel, she was appointed as a Delegate to the United Nations Committee for the Aging. Dorothy trememdously enjoyed her trips/meetings to the United Nations during her mid 70's to early 80's. Dorothy was a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of the Carver Garden Club. she loved gardening and playing bridge with her close friends. Dorothy is survived by one sister, Margaret Marianno, of Silver Spring,MD. Dorothy's daughter, Beverly K. O'Neal and son, S. Hassan Bilal reside in Greenburgh,NY. Dorothy was blessed with six grandchildren -Kimberly H. O'Neal, Rene' J. O'Neal,Arnold J. O'Neal,Jr., Taheera M. Bilal, Hassan M. Bilal, Rashad J. Bilal; two great-grandchildren - Lamar A. Boyer,Jr. ,'Isa A. Bilal; son-in-law, Arnold J. O'Neal, daughter-in-law, Gail Bilal and a host of nieces,nephews,cousins and friends.
