Daniel Joseph Byrne of Braintree went home to God April 23, while surrounded by his loving family, after a long and happy life. He was 81. The son of Irish immigrants, he was born and raised in the Neponset section of Dorchester and lived in Braintree for the past 53 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He served as the president and CEO of Byrne Industries Inc. for 40 years, literally building the business from the ground up. He enjoyed telling bad jokes, being with family and helping others, although he was not as fond of ducks as people thought. He was the husband of the late Virginia M. Byrne, although he often claimed to be undeserving of both the title and the woman. He was the proud father of eight children: Virginia and her husband Paul Monaco of Braintree, Patricia and her husband Richard Damon of Rockland, Daniel and his wife Linda Byrne of Lake Oswego, OR, Peggy and her husband Joseph Damore of Rockland, Joseph and his wife Teresa Byrne of Hanover, Mary Ellen Byrne and her companion Gene Steffanson of Scituate, Michael Byrne of Cambridge and Matthew and his wife Kelly Byrne of Weymouth. He was also the proud grandfather of 22 grand children and great-grandfather of two. He will be sorely missed by them all. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to visit the McMaster Funeral Home, 86 Franklin St., (Rte. 37), Braintree, Sunday, April 29, 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral Mass was held at St. Francis Xavier Church in Weymouth, Monday at 10 a.m. with interment immediately following at Braintree Cemetery.
