ObituaryCHARLES RUSSELL WHEELERMORAVIA - Charles R. Wheeler, 85, of 16 Donald Drive, Moravia, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2003 at Cortland Memorial Hospital. He was born January 27, 1918 in Scott, NY, the son of the late Ira Wheeler and Emma J. (Mulineaux) (Wheeler) Riggs. He lived most of his life in the Moravia area, attending Moravia High School.On October 9, 1939, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC's), better known as "Roosevelt's Tree Army", as a laborer-foreman at Camp Sp 10, Pulaski, NY, and later was camped at Selkirk Park, receiving his discharge September 8, 1941 from Co. 236 at Altmont, NY. On August 28, 1941, just prior to WW II, he enlisted in the United States Army Infantry. After being stationed at Camp Wheeler, Ga., he was sent overseas, landing on Normandy Beach. He was at Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland. His duties while serving there were as a truck driver, automobile serviceman and an anti-tank gun crewman. He served with Gen. Patton's 3rd Army, 8th Division, being rushed to the front of the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of CPL at Ft. Dix, NJ, on September 27, 1945. He is a Life Member of the V.F.W. Post #7127, Moravia, NY, and the American Legion, Moravia, NY.After returning to civilian life, he took up carpentry and masonry. He worked for Tuttles of King Ferry and Hewitt Bros. of Moravia for many years, before becoming self-employed. In later years, he worked with his son, Terry, before retiring in 1975. He did volunteer work on the V.F.W. building on Grove St., Moravia, as well as many other places. He enjoyed his work as a craftsman.He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene (Dann) Wheeler; one son, Terry and his wife, Sandra, of Lake Como; one daughter, Shirley Willis of Hobe Sound, FL; five grandchildren, David Mulberry of Vero Beach, FL, Janine Mulberry (husband, Alan Lycon) of Jupiter, FL, Kathleen (David) Worley of Jupiter, FL; Tracey (Cory) Hatfield of Cortland, and Wayne Wheeler (friend, Sherry) of Lake Como; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Elizabeth (Herbert) Neal of Virgil; one brother, Erwin (Doris) Wheeler of Knoxville, PA; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Wheeler of Corning, Lorena Wheeler of Seneca Falls, and Genevieve Wheeler of Schenectady; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great great-nieces and nephews.He was predeceased by his parents; four brothers, Gray Wheeler, Fay Wheeler, Richard Wheeler and John Wheeler; and a son-in-law, Rodney Willis of Hobe Sound, FL.Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2003 at Wade's Funeral Home, Church St., Moravia, NY. Funeral Services are scheduled for Friday, October 31, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Wayne Hampton officiating. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Dresserville, NY. The family requests that any donations be given to the Four Town Ambulance Squad, Moravia, NY.
