Charles Ray Rector, 80, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday evening, July 3, 2007.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Perry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Sammy M. Stabler officiating. A military gravesite service will follow at Cherokee Memory Gardens. Perry Funeral Home, directing.Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Betty Mae Grant Rector; three daughters, Jenell M. Cremeans, Huntington, W.Va., Ruth Ann Ray and her husband Rodney, Maryville, Tenn., and Rosemary Vallaradares, West Bridgewater, Mass.; a sister, Viola G. Edwards, Bolivar, Mo.; sister-in-law, Genevieve Rector, Dublin, Calif.; grandchildren, Drew Bronson, Jillian Cremeans, Andrea Miles, Erin and Bryan Rhoades, Seth and Jana Ray, Aaron Chauncey and wife Rhonda, and Robert Vallaradares; four great-grandchildren; honored friends, Jim and Keiko Comer, Dean and Fran Buttram and Kenneth Gilbert; and a host of others. His parents, his brother, Jesse John Rector of Dublin, Calif., and his faithful dog, Chelsea, preceded Ray in death.Ray was born in Roscoe, Mo., June 27, 1927, the youngest son of Jesse Monroe Rector and Viola Mae Myers. He worked on his father's farm until the age of 18 when he enlisted in the military. Mr. Rector made the Navy his career and retired in 1975 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. He was a Hull Technician stationed in San Diego, Calif., for over 20 years. He served during World War II, the Korean War, the Cuban Conflict and the Vietnam War. After serving two more years in the reserves he and his wife, Betty retired to Centre, where they have since called their home.Ray loved his new home in Alabama and spent many hours on the lake fishing with his friends and special grandson, Aaron. He was a good neighbor and friend to all who knew him. He was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed.Thank you to his doctor, Byron L. Nelson, M.D., Case Manager, Charlene Peek, and the staffs of Cherokee Medical Center and The Cherokee Co. Health and Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home for their professionalism and kindness and to all his wonderful neighbors.In lieu of flowers, please send donations for the building of The Cherokee County Humane Society, P.O. Box 99, Centre, AL 35960.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Perry Funeral Home.
