Charles Phillip Thomas, 82, of Elizabethtown, died Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at Kindred at Jewish Hospital in louisville. He was a native of Hardin County; served as a cook in the U.S. Army and was a member of St. John Catholic Church. He retired from Fort Knox civil service.He worked hard as a father, grandfather, farmer and a butcher. He was an avid woodworker, who enjoyed making furniture for people and made over 50,000 rosaries.He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence A. and Mary Agnes Thomas; six brothers, Francis Thomas, Joe Thomas, James Mac Thomas, Russell Thomas, Earl Thomas and Robert E. Thomas; and a great-granddaughter, Ava Simpson.Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Barbara Vessels Thomas; his children, Sheryl (Charlie) Phillips of Elizabethtown, Richard A. (JoEllen) Thomas of Elizabethtown, Katherine (Bobby) Bright of Cecilia, Judy (Greg) Skillman of Elizabethtown, Tim Thomas of Vine Grove and John (Tish) Thomas of Elizabethtown; one sister, Mary Catherine (Bob) Brown of Elizabethtown; his grandchildren, Deedra (Kyle) Murray of Lexington, Blake Simpson, Case Simpson, Ashley Thomas, Alexandra Skillman, Victoria Skillman and Clay Thomas, all of Elizabethtown, and Jessie Thomas of Florida; his stepgrandchildren, Valarie Skillman, Jason (Melissa) Phillips and Todd Phillips; great-grandchildren, Logan Parsons and Hannah Murray of Lexington, Caden Thomas and Kendall Skillman of Elizabethtown; and many nieces and nephews.The funeral is at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John Catholic Church near Rineyville with the Rev. Dan Lincoln and the Rev. Stanley Osborne officiating. Burial follows in St. John Cemetery.Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, June 22, and continues at 9 a.m. Monday at Brown Funeral Home in Elizabethtown.A prayer vigil service is today, June 22.Expressions of sympathy may take the form of Contributions to in Phillip's name to EWTN TV station, Our Lady of the Angels or St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. James Catholic Church.
