Charles Leo Johnson, 69, Lakeland, Fla., passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at Lakeland Regional Hospital after a four-year battle with cancer.Mr. Johnson was a 50-plus-year resident of Austin and proud of his heritage. He then retired to Lakeland. He enjoyed working on his farm and in his yard and loved spending time with his family. He also loved Kentucky basketball and trading guns.He worked at Morgan's Foods, Reliance Electric and retired from Cummins Inc. after 35 years of service.Born Sept. 14, 1941, in a log cabin on English Avenue in Austin, he was the son of Roy and Nellie Combs Johnson. On Sept. 5, 1964, he married Ruthie J. Burns Johnson at Austin Church of God. She survives in Lakeland.Other survivors include his children, Charles Allen Johnson of Scottsburg and Julia Ann (Jerry) Schrink of Seymour; granddaughter, Whitney Nicole James; stepgranddaughter, Crystal Schrink; two stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Glen (Mitzi) Johnson; and a sister, Shirley (Dan) Deaton.He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Reba (Joe) Dewitt; and his stepmother, Edna Johnson.A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the funeral home.Memorial donations may be made to an Austin High School scholarship fund in the name of Leo Johnson in care of Buchanan Funeral Home.
