LTC CHARLES C.JOHNSON, 75Ret. U.S. Army (USA) Veteran LAKELAND - Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Charles Clennon Johnson, 75, US Army (retired), passed away at home on October 27, 2009 from complications of diabetes. Chuck Johnson was born in Lakeland, Florida on December 27, 1933 to Valse and Julia Johnson. He attended John Cox Elementary School and was a member of the Lakeland Boys Club. He graduated from Lakeland Senior High School in 1952. In high school he enlisted in the Army Reserve and upon graduation entered the United States Army. He served two years and returned to Lakeland after being discharged and entered Florida Southern College, where he was the commander of the R.O.T.C. Honor Guard. Upon graduation he received his commission as a First Lieutenant (1LT) in the United States Army Infantry and then transitioned to the Military Police Corps. During his career in the Army he received numerous medals including the Legion of Merit for service and the Bronze Star for valor in Viet Nam. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, Reformation Lutheran Church, Tampa Bay Bulldog Club, and The Great Dane Club of Mid Florida, American Legion and VFW. Upon retirement from the Army he was designated as the senior instructor of Lakeland High School's Junior R.O.T.C. program where he served for 19 years. LTC Johnson leaves his wife of 54 years Elizabeth Garnes Johnson; 2 sons Lieutenant Commander Charles Craig Johnson, US Navy (retired) and wife Amy of Paisley, FL and Colonel Jeffrey Scott Johnson, US Army, and wife Gena of Norfolk, VA; five grandchildren (Khay-la, Kelley, Kryssa, Justin, Garrett) one step grandchild (Alexa), sister Patricia Johnson Meyer and a brother Valse Johnson of Lakeland, Florida. LTC Johnson will receive a military burial at Bushnell, Florida's National Cemetery on Monday November 2, 2009 at 1 P.M. A viewing will be held on Sunday November 1, 2009 from 2-3 P.M. at the Reformation Lutheran Church, 6760 Old Polk City Rd, Lakeland, FL 33809 with a service to follow at 3 P.M. Donations may be made to the SPCA, 5850 Brannen Rd. S. Lakeland, FL 33813 or to the Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave. Auburndale, Fl 33823. Attending Pallbearers are Val Johnson, Chazz Johnson, Jeff Johnson, and Kevin Kavanaugh. Condolences may be sent to the family at heathfuneralchapel.com.
