"Mike" "Mickey" In the early morning hours of Friday, February 21, 2003 in the 74th year of his life, Mike's remarkably long struggle against MS, heart disease, and diabetes came to an end. Predeceased by his parents Philip John and Martha Gertrude, he is survived by sisters Lorna (Jim Simpson), Marian (Ed Taylor), Rita (Joe McEwen); brothers Phil (Pat), Marty (Joan) and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Born in Ottawa, he was educated at St. Patrick's High School and was employed with the Federal Government Patent Office until illness forced him to leave. Although confined to hospital for many years, Mike had been an accomplished and prolific artist until his diseases limited his abilities. His paintings have been displayed at many charitable events. Blessed with a good voice, he loved to sing and for many years was an active member of the West End Achievers. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his caring and devoted family and by all his friends, especially Sandra Marshall and Tina Bekooy. A special note of thanks and appreciation to the staff at Elisabeth Bruyere for their kind and loving care over the 18 years that Mike lived there. Friends may call at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 235 Kent St. on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass Monday at 1 p.m. in St. Joseph's Church (Wilbrod & Cumberland Sts.) followed by interment at Notre Dame Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the MS Society, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or the Diabetes Society would be appreciated.
