Charles A. Johnson died Thursday, Jan. 28th at The Sarah House where he was a patient and resident with family by his side. "Charlie" was born April 13, 1925 to Swedish parents Otilia and Charles Rudolph Johnson while visiting his grandmother in New Jersey. The family returned a week later to their home on Long Island, New York where Charlie was raised. He graduated from Roslyn High School and New York Electrical School, specializing in electronics. He served in the Naval Reserves prior to World War II, and then was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served in the Pacific campaign, participating in the initial invasions of Guam, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was sent to Japan where he was assigned to the Yukosuka Naval Base as supervisor in the transportation division. He was a decorated combat veteran, receiving a battle star, and was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Board of Trustees of Williston Park, New York. To continue his public service, he entered the Police Force in Garden City, New York. He served as President of the St. George Association, the Protestant affiliation of the Police. He became a coach of the Police Boys' Club where his three sons participated in band and parades. He was instrumental in the funding for a bus to transport the club members to sporting events. To support five children with his first wife Barbara (deceased), he started his own photography business in conjunction with his police work. Two of his photos were published in LIFE magazine. After twenty years he retired from the police department, and started a trucking business, transporting materials for the building of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the World Trade Towers. He married Pat in 1987 and moved to Ormond By The Sea, Florida, where he completed the Coast Guard Auxiliary Boating Safety Course and enjoyed several years of boating on Florida rivers. He was a past president of the Aqua Vista Circles Association which awarded him a Certificate of Merit for his work and leadership in the building of the dunes crossover and the neighborhood seating area. He and Pat traveled extensively internationally and throughout the U.S. A stroke in 1999 curtailed his activities and he never fully recovered. His lifelong memberships include the Nassau Police Conference, the Association of Retired Police Officers, American Legion, Steuben Society, Police Benevolent Assoc., Retired Public Employees of New York, Fraternal Order of Police, St. George Assoc., International Police Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP Chapter 57. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach. He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughters, Deborah Walton and Dawn Ferraro; sons, Keith (Deirdre), Craig (Mary), Kenneth Johnson; sister, Yvonne Ford (Harold); step- daughters, Carol Westermann (Luke), Kelly Westermann, and Patricia Slade (Westby); ten grandchildren; two step-grandchildren. A Celebration of Charlie's Life will be held at First United Methodist Church, Ormond Beach, with Pastor Bill Owens presiding on Saturday, Feb. 6th at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be made to the Church, or the Hospice Veterans Partnership of Florida, Attn: Ret. Major Stuart A. Campbell.
