Mr. Hayes was born in Lakewood, Ohio and graduated from Ohio University and Ohio Northern Law School. He and his family moved to Monticello in 1971 where he practiced law. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club and the Jefferson County Bar Association.He served on the Board of Directors for Capital City Bank and Jefferson County Country Club. He also was city attorney for Monticello, school board attorney for Nassau County, was on the Board of Directors of Ohio Northern Law School, and a member of the Men's Club at St. Margaret's Catholic Church. Mr. Hayes is survived by his wife, Paula; one son, Brian (Rose) Hayes, Jr. of Tampa; three daughters, Julie Hayes of Jacksonville, Eileen Merkel of Jacksonville Beach, and Sarah Hayes of New York City; three brothers, Terrance (Sally) Hayes, Michael (Gail) Hayes, and Timothy (Nancy) Hayes; four grandchildren, Kelly Hayes, Brian Hayes, III, Melanie Merkel, and Andrew Merkel, and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents George and Margaret Hayes and one brother, Dennis Hayes. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Friday, May 6th at St. Margaret's Church, 1565 E. Washington Street, Monticello.The family will receive friends Thursday, May 5th from 5:00 to 8:00pm at Begg's Funeral Home, 485 E. Dogwood Street, Monticello. Internment will be at Roseland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic charities or the American Red Cross.
