Betty Jane Haggerty passed away on April 23, 2011, at the age of 84. Visiting hours are Thursday, April 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, N.J. Betty will be laid to rest privately with her beloved parents and brother. Born in Orange, N.J., Betty graduated from Columbia High School. She began her "second career" at Summerfield School in Neptune, N.J., in 1958 and moved to the office of the superintendent in 1961. She then worked for the Monmouth County Board of Elections before moving on to state government in 1970. She was an administrative assistant to the Secretary of State of New Jersey, the chancellor of the Department of Higher Education, and the commissioner of the Department of Transportation. She was a member of the Yardley Country Club for many years. She loved golf and the "Yardley Ladies" group. In later years she moved to Florida, where she became an avid bridge player. Betty was predeceased by her parents, Frederick Luts Sr. and Nellie Quinn, and her brother, David Luts Jr. She is survived by Clarence Haggerty, her constant companion in her time of need; her son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Barbara Haggerty; her granddaughter, Michelle Burns and family, David, Zachary and Sarah; granddaughter, Nicole J. Haggerty; her sister, Eleanor Briden, and nieces, Susan and Grace.
