->OAKLAND -- Barbara T. Wheeler, 90, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Waterville.She was born in Oakland on Feb. 18, 1918, the daughter of Archie and Helen (Haskell) Towle. Barbara attended local schools, graduating from Williams High School in Oakland, class of 1936 and from Colby College in Waterville, class of 1940. During high school, she was a stellar basketball player and excelled in all sports at Colby.Being a lifelong resident of Oakland, Barbara showed great interest in town affairs. She enjoyed attending the town council meetings and was active in the Mcgrath Pond-Salmon Lake Association. She was a longtime member of the Oakland Area Historical Society and was part of the group instrumental in getting the McCartney House Museum moved to its present location. Barbara was a Girl Scout Leader and a member of the All Souls Universalist Church.Barbara was a great lover of nature and enjoyed almost all outdoor physical activities. She spent her lifetime continually learning about healthful nutrition and living. She had a love of animals, especially horses, dogs and cats. Barbara was most delighted when surrounded by her family, including the campers and extended family at Wheeler's Housekeeping Camps.Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a son, William Wheeler, and two brothers, Robert and Carlton Towle.Surviving are her husband, Alfred H. Wheeler, who she met in high school chorus and married in August, 1940; a daughter, Marilyn Wheeler of Fairfield; a son, John Wheeler and his wife, Mary Jo Carlsen, of Waterville; four grandchildren, Robyn Deveney, Sarah Wheeler, and Melsen and Eric Carlsen; and several nieces and nephews.Friends are invited to visit 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 4, at All Souls Universalist Church on Church Street in Oakland. Spring burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery in Oakland.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the All Souls Universalist Church, c/o Helen Witham, 66 High St., Oakland, ME 04963.
