Barbara R. Jensen, age 76, of Scituate, died at home surrounded by her family on October 7, 2014. The cause of death was colon cancer. Barbara enjoyed a rich and fulfilling life and was loved and cherished by her family and many friends. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., November 30, 1937, where she spent the early part of her childhood before moving to Miami, Fla., where she attended Edison Jr. and Senior High School and the University of Miami, where she obtained a Bachelor of Education in 1959. Barbara was listed as Whos Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges 1958-1959, and was Social Chairman of the Tri Delta Sorority. Barbara taught elementary school for several years in Miami and then Chicago, before moving to Scituate in 1966. Barbara spent most of her adult life in Scituate which became her beloved adopted home town. She raised her family in Scituate and was involved in many community activities. Barbara was a real estate broker for Vin Doyle real estate for several years, and was active in town civics. One of her passions was gardening, and she maintained a beautiful garden at her home along with being an enthusiastic member of the Scituate Garden Club. She was also a collector of Early American antiques. Her true passion though was her family, friends and, well, talking with people. She was captain of her high school and college cheerleading squads and throughout her life she continued to display the warm infectious spirit and outgoing vivacious personality that made her such a personal cheerleader and friend. Barbara treasured the many deep and close friendships she had in Scituate and the local community and could not think of living anywhere else. She was famous for running to the post office but then returning hours later after bumping into a friend that, just wouldnt stop talking. She loved spending time with her family and doted on her grandchildren who used her mispronounced name - Grandma Darbie - which she loved. The children quickly learned from Darbie that the dishwasher wasnt meant for cleaning, but rather for storing cookies and candy. Barbara is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lund Jensen of Scituate; a sister, Connie Kangas of Sarasota, Fla.; three children, Kris Jensen M.D. of East Montpelier, Vt., Erik Jensen of Whitman, and Kaj Jensen of Venice, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Julie Jensen; and grandchildren, Alex, Jack, and Johanna Jensen, all of East Montpelier, Vt.; and Kajs spouse, Robert Bailey, also of Venice, Fla. The family will hold a private memorial. Donations in Barbaras name can be made to the Scituate Garden Club, P.O. Box 53, Scituate, MA 02066. The family expresses their gratitude to the many caregivers who provided excellent care to Barbara during the last several years of her illness including the late Robert Seidel M.D. and Denise Buckley M.D. of Harbor Medical and their staff, Dr. Joel Goldberg of Brigham and Womens Hospital, Dr. Rolf Freter and the entire oncology team and many others at South Shore Hospital who cared for her. Barbara repeatedly said that she could not imagine getting better care anywhere else. The family also wants to thank the entire team at South Shore Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the South Shore who provided excellent home care during her illness, along with the Visiting Angels Service of the South Shore, and the many friends that looked after her.
