JOHNSTON, Barbara Of Okanagan Falls, BC died of an inoperable cerebral hemorrhage on June 11, 2010 at Penticton Regional Hospital. Born at Provost, Alberta, June 3, 1933, to William H. Kankewitt, a self-educated Jewish child immigrant who finished his working life as Family Court Judge in Edmonton, and Marjorie ""Midge"" (Tadman) Kankewitt. After living in Vancouver and Seattle (and giving birth to 3 children) with first husband Jim Page, she returned in 1962 to Edson, (where she had figure-skated and graduated high school), as a teacher and became a founding member of the NDP. Later she taught English brilliantly at several Edmonton Junior and Senior Secondary schools, earned a BEd from U of A and remarried in 1970, to W. Mark Johnston, an accountant. Burnt out, and debilitated by a lung cancer not detected until 1982, she retired in 1981 and moved to Summerland, BC, when Mark was transferred to Penticton by CRA. She lived many happy years in Summerland, Sage Mesa (near Penticton) and Okanagan Falls, reading, gardening, traveling and visiting casinos. Predeceased by ex-husband; parents; son, Brian; daughter, Tracy and brother, Bill. She is survived and sadly missed by husband Mark; son, Russ (Fontana, California); grandson, Shayne (Penticton); cousins and friends, Marilyn Moss (Vancouver) and Sheldon Iskow (Rockville, MD); nieces Leigh Kankewitt (Vancouver), Zoe K. MacDougall and Zan K. Carrow (Victoria); as well as many friends. In accordance with our family's custom, there will be no funeral. Memorial Donations may be sent to the BC Cancer Foundation.
