VAIRO - Alma (nee Sarro) , Beloved mother of James and Rosemarie. Died of Heart Failure, Wednesday, February 14, 2007. Alma came to this country from Italy at the age of three with her mother, Maria Rosaria and two sisters, Edith and Meralda to join her father John Sarro. She lived the remaining 85 years of her life in the Inwood she loved, surrounded by family and friends. Alma was very proud of her Albanian-Italian heritage. She cooked and baked all the traditional foods and maintained her Albanian and Italian languages. Alma was married to Michael Vairo who died as a WWII Veteran. In addition to her two children, she is survived by her beloved granddaughter, Victoria Rosen and her two dear brothers, Dale and Almerindo Sarro, and her dear nephew, John Monteleone and her dear niece and nephew, Jan Marie Salome and Dale Michael Sarro and their families. Alma was a lifelong communicant of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish where she taught Sunday School and sang in their Choir for many years. Alma loved music and was a longtime member of The United Choral Society. While a wonderful homemaker Alma was also very proud of her career, at a time when Italian immigrants were not welcome in the workplace she started work in the Business Office of A&S. Later, as a young widow she went to work for the Inwood office of Franklin National Bank, later E-A Bank, rising to the position of head Bookkeeper. Alma will be missed by her family, friends and community. Reposing will be Thursday 7-9PM and Friday 2-4 and 7-9PM at Meserole Funeral Home, Inwood. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 9:45AM at OLGC RC Church, Inwood. Interment will follow in Greenfield Cemetery. Masses will be appreciated.
