Alice Jane Scott Waters - TYBEE ISLAND - Alice Jane Scott Waters, daughter of the late Anita Barksdale Scott and John Harvey Scott, peacefully passed away at her home on Monday, September 17, 2007. Mrs. Waters was born in Savannah on August 25, 1920, resided in Atlanta for 22 years, and lived on Tybee Island since 1976. She was a 1938 graduate of Savannah High School, a member of the third graduating class of Armstrong Junior College, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1942. She earned a master's degree from Emory University. While living in Atlanta, Mrs. Waters was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and many civic organizations. She retired from the Atlanta City Schools in 1976, after a career as a teacher and librarian. During her teaching career, Mrs. Waters was honored as a State of Georgia Star Teacher. As a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church in Savannah, Mrs. Waters was a member of the Episcopal Church Women and served as a docent at the historic Green-Meldrim House. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and an honorary sustaining member of the Phoenix Society of Atlanta. She was preceded in death by William Sessel Waters, her beloved husband of 46 years and her dearly loved brothers in law, Ted (T.H.) Waters of Savannah and Cecil R. Johnson of Gastonia, NC. Mrs. Waters is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Nevin Miller of Dacula, GA; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ellen Waters of Lavonia, GA; son, Allan Waters of Boise, ID; sister, Dot Johnson of Gastonia, NC; and sister, Ginger Musgrave of Piedmont, MO; granddaughter, Caroline Miller Foster and husband, Brian and grandson, Nevin Miller, III and wife, Lily, granddaughter, Elizabeth Waters Stevens and husband Todd; grandson, Stewart Waters; great grandchildren, Raine Harkins, Winn Foster, Joshua Stevens and Madison Stevens; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth and Cecil Johnson, Caroline and Pete Huffstetler, David and Eileen Johnson, Carl and Donna Johnson, Blanche Grimes, Susie and Jim Carnes, many great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews; special friends, Charles and Woodie Williams, Craig and Georgette Neidlinger, Sandra Williams, Nancy Ferreira, and the kind and dedicated staff of Care One. The family wishes to thank Dr. Walt Brown, Dr. Richard Bozinger, Dr. Kathy Chu, Dr. James Judy, and The Rev. Gavin G. Dunbar for their compassionate and loving care of Mrs. Waters. The family will receive friends at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside Service will be held Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. in Bonaventure Cemetery.
