SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Alan Johnson, 63, of Tatnic, died on Jan. 5, 2011, in the home he built, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Seattle, Wash., on April 13, 1947, he was the son of Lila (Anderson) Johnson of Tatnic and the late Dan Johnson. He was raised in Eliot, graduating from Eliot High School with the class of 1965. He furthered his education at Plymouth State College, where he earned a degree in biology and met his future wife of 40 years, Terry (Jones) Johnson. In 1971, he and Terry were married and together they made a home and raised a family. In 1979, they built their home, working tirelessly around a full-time profession to make a loving and welcoming home for their family and friends to enjoy. A dedicated employee of the Wells Sanitary District for over 30 years, Alan was a trusted coworker with a keen ability to solve those challenges that only experience would prepare you for. An active member of his community he and his son, Todd, founded the Marshwood Ski Team in 1987, a still-thriving program serving hundreds of youth throughout the years. He enjoyed caring for his property, always taking solace in time spent weeding his gardens, picking up those pesky sticks from the lawn and preparing a new area of the property for friends and family to come together and enjoy. He will be missed by his loving family, his wife, Terry, of South Berwick; daughter, Kristin Eckhardt and her husband, Wyman, of Durham, N.H., and son, Todd Johnson and Amy Zutterling of Colorado; grandchildren, Georgia and Tess Eckhardt of Durham, and his loving mother, Lila, of South Berwick; a brother, Donald, of South Berwick; a sister, Kay Snow and her husband, Robert, of York, a number of nieces and nephews and an endless number of friends acquired over the years. The First Federated Church of South Berwick and the Rev. Donna Lee Muise will open their doors to the community on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. for a Celebration of Alan's Life, in honor of his love of flowers, everyone is encouraged to wear a flower in his memory. A time of refreshment and sharing will be held in the Gymnasium at Marshwood Great Works School on Academy Street following the service. Folks may feel free to park at either location and walk between, or utilize the Central School or Town Hall parking lots. Flowers are welcome for the service or donations in his memory may be made to Beacon Hospice, 42 Brickyard Lane, York, Maine, 03909 or to the MHS Ski Team that held such a special place in his heart, c/o Marshwood High School Ski Team, 260 HL Dow Highway, South Berwick, Maine, 03908.
